If you send bulk mail, it is important to stay up to date on the latest rules and regulations involving sending bulk mail. When you invest in the right mailing solutions, you can count on the fact that it will always be up to date with the latest prices for postage. However, there are other steps you can take to ensure you are up to date.
What is Bulk Mail?
First, let us go over what we mean by bulk mail so that you can be sure you are using the right term. It is a term that refers to defining quantities of mail required in order to get a bulk discount. Why is it cheaper? Because when a company takes the time to presort their bulk mail by zip code, it costs the USPS less to process – and this is then passed on to the companies that save them this money.
Steps Involved in Getting USPS Presort Bulk Rates
Not just any company can qualify for bulk rates. You must meet the minimum pieces required for the specific type of bulk mail you are sending, and you must apply for a USPS bulk mail permit and then pay the fees associated with that.
Once you are set up for bulk mailing, you will need to make sure that all addresses and zip codes you’re sending to are accurate and will need to weigh every piece of mail and apply the right barcode and postage.
Then you will need to presort mail pieces based on the type of mail they are, their size, and the ZIP code they are being sent to. Then deliver that presorted bulk mail to the Post Office that issued you your bulk mail permit.
There Are Different Minimums for Different Types of Mail
The minimum requirements for how much you have to send for it to be considered bulk mail vary based on the type of mail. For Parcel Post, you need 50 pieces. Marketing Mail (previously known as Standard Mail) requires 200 pieces. The presorted bound printed matter requires 300.
Five hundred pieces is the minimum amount for Presorted First-Class Mail, Presorted Library Mail, and Presorted Media Mail (once known as Special Standard Mail).
