Non-Profit Postage Makes Up for a Lot of the United States Mailing
The Alliance of Non-Profit Mailers has determined that about 10% of all mail volume in the United States comes from non-profits. As a result, the USPS offers certain qualified non-profit organizations lower postage rates. If your non-profit is one of the qualifying ones, you could save when sending periodicals and marketing mail.
More About Eligible Non-Profits
Note that even if the IRS has given you tax-exempt status for being a non-profit, this does not mean that the USPS will as well because they use different criteria. In general, the types of organizations that the USPS might consider eligible for non-profit postage rates includes:
- Agricultural
- Educational
- Labor
- Philanthropic
- Religious
- Scientific
- Veterans
- Some political committees
Even if your non-profit fits into one of those categories, it is not a guarantee that it will qualify.
These Groups Do Not Qualify for Non-Profit Postage Rates
There are certain groups that will not qualify for non-profit postage rates, including individuals, business leagues, social, hobby, or other types of clubs, chambers of commerce, trade associates, and certain types of political organizations. If you are not sure if your organization will qualify, you can complete and submit a form at the USPS to find out.
Preparing Non-Profit Mail
Once an application is approved to send mail as a non-profit, you will need to make sure that all mailings you send with the non-profit rates are compliant with requirements. The requirements are the same as they are for other USPS marketing mail except in two ways. First, the words Nonprofit Organization, Nonprofit Org, or Nonprofit are required to be on the postage or printed on the mail next to the postage area.
Second, the name and address of your non-profit organization must appear outside of the mail or be featured prominently within its contents. Other than these two minor differences, it is sent the same way that other mail is sent.
